British Stars Shine in Sydney: Gibson and Rose Clinch FIP Silver Australian Open Title!

The British padel duo, Aimee Gibson (GB No.1) and Catherine Rose (GB No.3), have ended 2024 and started the new season in spectacular style, claiming victory at the prestigious FIP Silver Sydney Championships. This title, their second major win in recent months, comes hot on the heels of their triumph at the FIP Rise Qatar Tournament in November, solidifying their reputation as one of the most formidable partnerships in British padel.

Dominating in Sydney

Gibson and Rose were an unstoppable force in Sydney, navigating a tough draw with confidence and skill. After receiving a bye in the first round, the pair powered through their matches, taking down Jessica Brycki and Pascalle Thenoux in straight sets before overcoming the Dutch duo of Maaike Betz and Janine Hemmes in the semi-finals.

In the final, the Brits faced a strong Spanish pair, Carla Fernandez Gonzalez and Nerea Guerra Santana, but proved their dominance by securing the title with a convincing 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Notably, Gibson and Rose did not drop a single set throughout the tournament, a testament to their incredible form and teamwork.

A Season of Momentum

The Sydney triumph is more than just a trophy, it’s a significant milestone for British padel. This victory marks the highest achievement by British players on the Cupra FIP Tour to date, with Gibson and Rose competing against some of the best players in the world.

For Gibson, this is her third professional title, adding to her earlier wins in Manila together with Victoria Nicholas, and Doha. For Rose, it’s her second FIP title, building on her success in Qatar last November. Their back-to-back victories demonstrate their exciting level and growth as a partnership, and make it clear that the British duo is here to fight for every title on this 2025.

What’s Next for Gibson and Rose?

With their Sydney success, Gibson is now on the cusp of breaking into the world’s top 100 rankings, a career-first milestone. Meanwhile, Rose sees this achievement as the perfect springboard for further success:

“We had some amazing wins against very strong opponents. To be able to compete in such an amazing country is exciting for us, and we’re making the most of these opportunities.”

Looking ahead, the duo will continue their Australian campaign at the FIP Silver Melbourne Open, taking place from January 8–12. Buoyed by their victory in Sydney, they are confident about extending their impressive form.

Why This Matters for British Padel

Gibson and Rose’s achievements are not just personal triumphs; they represent the growing potential of British players on the international stage. With countries like Spain, Argentina, and Italy, dominating the sport, it’s encouraging to see UK players making waves at the highest levels of competition.

The addition of FIP Silver events to the Cupra FIP Tour calendar has only raised the stakes, offering greater prize money and recognition. Gibson and Rose’s success in this new category demonstrates their readiness to take on the world’s best and pave the way for future British talent.

A Bright Future Ahead

As 2025 kicks off, British padel fans have much to celebrate and even more to look forward to. Gibson and Rose’s victories in Qatar and Sydney mark them as a partnership to watch in the year ahead. Can they continue their winning streak in Melbourne?

One thing’s for sure: British padel is on the rise, and Aimee Gibson and Catherine Rose are leading the charge. Stay tuned as their journey unfolds!
