Padel is taking the world by storm, and it’s not just us saying it, it’s the favourite sport of global icons like Leo Messi, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Lando Norris, just to name a few.
But while padel is huge in popularity in countries like Spain (where most professional players come from), the UK is still catching up. Jonathan Rowland, Chairman of R3 Sports, who’s stepping up with a bold plan to change the game. His vision? A Franchise League for Padel in the UK, backed by sports stars, celebrities, and influencers to take the sport’s profile to the next level.
Big Names set to Join the League
Some of the celebrities already in the spotlight for this new super league include David Beckham and Lando Norris. Beckham, a long-time padel enthusiast, was first spotted on the courts in Miami back in 2020. “I got addicted to padel real quick,” he shared, and he’s been hooked ever since.
Meanwhile, Formula 1 superstar Lando Norris recently showed off his skills in Doha, playing with other F1 drivers before the Grand Prix. With big names like these endorsing padel, the sport is set to gain some serious momentum.
Why This Matters for UK Padel
Rowland’s initiative couldn’t come at a better time. While countries like Italy and France are investing millions into padel’s development, the UK’s padel scene has largely depended on private investors. This new league promises to bring structure, visibility, and excitement to the sport. As we’ve already seen, this is something players, coaches, and clubs have already started buzzing about.
The idea is clear: a franchise-backed league with star power could be exactly what UK padel needs to catch up with the rest of the world.
Is This the Boost UK Padel Needs?
